The 2017 Golden Marmots were February 10th at the Mallardi Cabaret.
Host, our very own Harry Woods, and co-host, Crested Butte Museum Executive Director, Shelley Popke, kept the show and the audience rolling throughout the evening. In addition to all of our awards, there were scenes from the past performance year reminding us all of the vast array of talent here in the valley. The show started out with a special rendition of "Seasons of Love," re-written by Brent Laney, showcasing the Marmots and the 2016 season (see below for lyrics). Brynn O'Connell, Trish Seeberg, and Rich Driscoll reprised their roles from Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, showing us all why the show was the 2016 Outstanding Production. Nik Beukelman and Evie Loperfido then showed us how Taking The Next Step from Home for the Holidays was a reminder how young, first love pulls on the heart strings. Brent Laney, Alec Lindeman, Katie Thomas, and Nel Burkett told us all about a government-sponsored dating App, Date-icaid, which turned out to be the Outstanding Ten-Minute Play. While accepting her award, Outstanding Ten Minute Play Writer/Director, Katie Thomas, thanked Eric Ross for assisting her and all the bad dates and poor dating scene here in the Butte. Several months prior to the Marmots Patricia Seeberg spent long hours dusting off photos, asked Mallardi alum for memories, and dug through boxes of history. Along with Jack Gibbons, they compiled a moving tribute to Phil Roy, longtime actor and friend of the theatre, who passed last year. Mary Tuck and Alec Lindeman, as Berthe and Pippin, introduced Berthe's number, "Time To Start Living," from the musical, Pippin. Mary led the whole audience to sing the chorus while the choreography came back to many Pippin performers. Only from the minds of Jesse Buchanan and Harmony Dawson would a lip-synched award presentation for Outstanding Production be a fitting near-end to the award presentations. Starting with "Hello" by Adele, those two mimicked good taste with song lines for nearly three minutes. Harry also surprised the audience with the announcement of the Ten Minute Play theme. The theme this year is "The Real Housewives of Crested Butte."
Congratulations to all of the winners!

Seasons of Love, Marmot Style
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred marmots
Five hundred twenty-five thousand golden marmots so dear
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred marmots
We're here to honor, our productions this year
In stagelights, no regrets, we see who feels entitled
It's Vanya, and Sonia, and Masha, and Spike
In
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred marmots
How do we honor, the plays that we liked
Plays that we love
Plays that we love
Plays that we love
The plays that we love
Our season of love
Season of love
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred marmots
Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments to plan
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred marmots
How do give an award to a woman or a man?
Oh Pippen he yearned
For his place in the sky
And at Christmas we learned
Of Rudolph's goodbye
It's time now
to sing out
when our season finally ends
lets celebrate, remember a year in the life of friends
Remember the love
remember the love
remember the love
Plays that we love
Season of love
