This 1987 winner of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Young Playwrights Award is perfect for high school production. It is a contemporary play about high school kids who are urged to take on an outside project to help someone in the community. They decide to help Al, a 39-year old cerebral palsy victim. There are actually two "Als" in this play: the stricken Al the world sees and the title character who is perceptive, blunt, and sometimes bitter and who comments on Al's life and on the efforts of the kids who help him. Inside Al feels isolated in his body and is always struggling to get out. Inside, Al is a dancer.
The play deals with issues of Adolescence, Friendship, and Illness & Health and is appropriate for all audiences. The characters are all teens between the ages of 13 and 19. For CBMT, guest artist, Hunter Jones, a 19-year old college student from Laramie, Wyoming born with cerebral palsy, is performing the title role.
Tickets are $10 from our box office. Doors open at 7:00pm with curtain at 7:30 November 13-15 and a 2:00 matinee on Saturday the 15th at the Mallardi Cabaret Theatre - Elk Avenue at Second Street - Crested Butte, CO - 970-349-0366.
