Urinetown: the Musical
June 21-24, 28-30, July 1st, 2012
An award-winning Broadway hit, Musical Theatre International calls it: "One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold..." Urinetown: The Musical, (Pronounced “Yoor ‘n toun”), is a satirical Broadway musical comedy with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis and book by Greg Kotis. It satirizes the legal system, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement and municipal politics. The story line opens with a twenty-year drought, causing a terrible water shortage, making private toilets unthinkable. This Crested Butte Mountain Theatre production, directed by Mona Wood-Patterson with set design by Charles Ford and musical direction by Derek Carden, was be performed at the Crested Butte Center for the Arts June 21-24, 28-30 and July 1st.

Few authors can claim that a pay toilet in Europe led to a hit musical. And yet, for Urinetown author Greg Kotis, that is exactly what happened. After a desperate moment in line at a pay toilet, Kotis began writing his inventive musical, which not only satirizes corporate greed and social idealism, but is itself a parody of the musical genre. Attentive audiences will notice riffs on West Side Story, Les Miserables, Big River, Chicago, and Fiddler on the Roof, among other musicals. With Brechtian cleverness, Urinetown: The Musical capitalized on its “bad title”and unusual subject matter to become the darling of Broadway during the 2001 season. The show went on to win three Tony awards, thus proving that inspiration can occur anywhere. We have thoroughly enjoyed bringing this ensemble piece to you.
